When children are playing alone on the green,
In comes the playmate that never was seen.
When children are happy and lonely and good,
The Friend of the Children comes out of the wood.

Nobody heard him, and nobody saw,
His is a picture you never could draw,
But he’s sure to be present, abroad or at home,
When children are happy and playing alone.

Inspired by the poem by Robert Louis Stevenson and the lost “child” spirit that bounces the ball late at night in the second floor hallway of the Grand Midway Hotel.

*The Unseen Playmate:  made from upcycled porcelain babydoll bust gifted to me by my wonderful boyfriend.  assembled with various papers, paints, metal paints, rusting techniques, acrylic staining, muslin, canvas, brass tacks, and thorns.

Myself and the mixed media art piece done for The Grand Midway’s Poe room. The Grand Midway is a historic and notoriously haunted hotel built in the early 1800s, that is currently the private residence of several artists and creative folks of all kinds and owned by a dear friend and gentleman, Blair Murphy. I was honored to do this piece for this fantastic room that now houses one of the oldest, most pristine, and extensive first edition Poe collections.
Light painting photo done by a hotel inhabitant who, respectively, wishes to remain anonymous.

Since I started Morose & Macabre in 2009, I’ve been fortunate enough to share my work with artists and art lovers alike.  On a few rare occasions, usually at exhibitions and events, I get to meet the fantastic and wicked folks who indulge in our dark side.  A couple from my area, have been large supporters of my work for a couple of years and I’ve befriended them since.  They are an artistic couple, themselves.  Both photographers.  I recently had the pleasure of working with Angela Harshman, and will soon be working with her husband, Tim.  This is the “circus” photoset from my experience with this fantastic woman.  I will also include the dark victorian photoset, and the doll photoset that we worked on in a latter post.
More photos from this set can be seen on my web page at www.moroseandmacabre.com/macabrenoir

I should also add that the fantastic skirt in these was hand crafted by Evil Lily Originals and the cincher was made by Louise Black, both are fabulous and talented women in their own right.

Weeping Post Mortem Pillow doll by Macabre Noir

Post mortem photography was a tradition in honoring the dead and as a reminder of immortality and memento for the living. The weeping post mortem memento pillow doll holds a post mortem heat transfered print of mourning mother and child. Her body is made from soft muslin, stained and distressed with tea-esque and grey/blue acrylic washes. The heat transfer is framed by stained, crocheted lace, darning floss, and various buttons. She is hand painted with acrylic paint (NOT A PRINT DOLL).
Measures 16 in tall by 8 in wide.

"Ash to Ash, Dust to Dust"…..
The Architect is an original mixed media assemblage by Macabre on 11x14 inch wood frame mounted canvas. The paper sculpted skull has been distressed with layers of acrylic paint and blackened bronze metal paint and has a light grungy green patina, it’s jaw is hinged into place by brass rivets. The Architect has a crown of intertwined, thin, dried grape vine tangled with soft spun yarns and neutral colored darning floss. He is nestled into a frame of stained wooden roses. He is bound into place by thin jute rope that is secured by rusty eye hooks. The canvas base is multiple paint layer stripes and crackle medium and is framed by rusted blackened bronze metal paint and nails. Script has been ink stamped, painted, and scratched onto various textured and aged papers and stitched into place with blue/grey darning floss. The back of the piece is finished with faux leather that is secured into place with brass tacks and has a thin wire for hanging.
